Myopia Management

Myopia Control in Columbia, MD

Myopia or nearsightedness is the leading cause of visual impairment in children worldwide.  Studies show approximately 23% of the world’s population had myopia, with a predicted increase to 50% by the year 2050. At Ellicott City Vision, we are committed to slowing the progression of myopia in children and young adults through advanced myopia management. As myopia increases, the risk of serious eye conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy also rises. Our goal is to help protect long-term vision and reduce dependence on stronger prescriptions.

We offer atropine eye drop therapy, a safe and effective treatment that has been shown to slow myopia progression by relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanism. Additionally, we fit multifocal soft contact lenses, including MiSight and C-Vue lenses, which are designed to create a special focus pattern that helps slow the eye’s elongation.

For those looking for a non-surgical, overnight option, we provide orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses, which gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, allowing for clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. This method has been proven to significantly reduce myopia progression.

Beyond treatment, we emphasize visual hygiene education, teaching children and parents about proper screen time management, outdoor activity benefits, and good reading habits to help reduce eye strain and slow myopia progression. Regular monitoring and follow-up appointments allow us to track changes in vision and adjust treatment plans accordingly.

At Ellicott City Vision, we take a personalized approach to myopia management. The most recent studies are linked in the following section:
